Members Present: Ahern, Baade, Doak, Hosch, Munson, Schuller, Osterhaus, Lebo
Goals: Review 'homework' from last time - researching methods of on-line reading and differences from traditional text.
Hosch: Readings from a reading strategies book; how to use traditional strategies and converting to on-line strategies.
Munson: Ipad uses -- mainly resources in; not producers out.
Osterhaus: Traditional skills cannot be thrown out; need to maintain memorization skills; be careful in use of technology does reduce brain function.
Rouse: NY times - blogging connection. Discerning between good writing and scholarship. Students read more but read less books.
Doak: Note-taking from web-based text. There is a need to teach summary of text and paraphrasing.
Baade: Did research on vocabulary and how kids will read a passage and not understand it because they don't have the vocabulary. They talked about Call strategies where the vocabulary is linked to a definition or explanation. I use my web page for lots of things, so instead of just putting out the article or vocabulary list I linked vocabulary words to see if student would use it and improve comprehension skills.
For next time: Group will individually implement strategies and report back to the group.
